What are the LAF guild Study Groups?
The LAF guild is dedicated to all fiber arts, and our mission statement spells out our specific dedication to education in the fiber arts. Part of our vision for the fulfillment of that mission is the formation of study groups for more in depth study on particular fiber arts. Study groups are meant for serious study of the subject and involve a commitment to participate, attend and do homework. If you are looking for a more social atmosphere, you may want to join or start a social group in your particular fiber field.
We have one study group in progress and are currently forming two more study groups. A felting study group and a color study group. Our ongoing study group is the HGA COE based spinning study group. More information on the COE spin study group and the newly forming color study group is below. A detailed description of the felting study group is coming soon. Do you have a study group you'd like to see happen? Propose your study group and we'll see if we can get it going for next year.

Felting study group
Our first meeting of the new year, Sunday Jan 6th, will also be the first meeting of the Felt Study Group! If you are a member and interested in improving on your felting skills, please join us at the first meeting. This group will meet for 5 consecutive months with a major show & tell at the end. The group will decide what types of things we'd like to explore. This will be a wet felting group, if you'd like to do needle felting, maybe that can be another study group! I will be facilitating, but not "teaching", we will be teaching ourselves!

COE spinning study group
When: once a month beginning September 2007. Meets the first Sunday of the month at the regular LAF guild meeting.
Who: Anyone dedicated to learning more about spinning. Beginners and experienced spinners will both learn from this group and can help others learn more too. Membership in the spinning study group is limited to 12 members. Membership will close at the third meeting of this study group at which time fees must be paid.
Cost: All study group members must be members of the LAF guild. Yearly membership in LAF is $30. In addition, there is a $50 study group fee which will go toward some materials for the study group. Other materials you will need to purchase separately. These fees are due at the time the membership closes (the third meeting) and are NON REFUNDABLE.
What: The LAF guild's COE spinning group is a forum to learn the basics as well as the fine points of spinning. The curriculum/format is based on the Handweaver's Guild of America's Certificate of Excellence in Spinning program (HGA COE). You do NOT have to be an experienced spinner to participate in the study group, beginners are welcome. And you do NOT have to take the HGA COE certification (next time it is offered is 2009). However, this is a serious study group and we will be working our way through the various fibers and techniques outlined in the COE manual so we ask that members undertake the study group with a commitment to follow the plan. We will be purchasing and sharing fleeces and other fibers for some of our exercises.
